In 1997, the first
Birth Counselling Skills program was launched by educator Charlotte
Millington of Victoria, British Columbia. This program brought to light
the concept of one-on-one peer counselling for practitioners in the
perinatal field.
In 2000, the BCS program was suspended for an overhaul. The program had been intended as a supplement to existing perinatal careers, but as it became evident that it was desired as an independent career, Millington realized that additional skills would be needed. In 2002, Millington founded the Global Birth Institute, North America's first college of perinatal services. The college began with four core certificate program, with plans to offer advanced programs as soon as possible. In 2004, Millington released a more advanced program where students could earn a Diploma in Perinatal Services. This program finally met the global need for a more solid foundation for entry level professionals. Planned for September 2005, the new Birth Counselling Skills program will be a two-year Associate's Degree program. The Diploma in Perinatal Services, or equivalent, will meet the requirements of the first year, with the second year offering a counselling intensive. |
